Kauai: When Opportunity Knocks, Open the Door…

41Dreams can, and do, come true when you least expect them to. The key is to keep your eyes and ears open, and when an opportunity knocks, open the door. If you take too long to wonder why or how, or whether you should (or even could) something or someone will make the decision for you and you might miss it.

Some 25 years ago I thought I had found a way to help my mom realize a life-long dream. I had saved enough money to take us both to Hawaii. OK, the dream was mine too; to walk on sandy beaches and gather shells; to scale mountainous volcanoes and stand amidst the clouds while staring in amazement at the myriad shades of brown and green. But, most of all, I wanted to learn how to do the Hula.

Unfortunately, my mom didn’t take the news about our trip as I had imagined. In fact, she admitted that flying, especially for eight hours, was not something she was willing to do.

Jump ahead 25 years to Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 7:56 pm. My husband David receives this text from his dad, Wayne:

Wayne: We are going to Hawaii on the 22nd
David: We are?
Wayne: Diane and I (Diane is Wayne’s wife, she grew up on the Hawaiian Islands)

David and I had discussed my dream of visiting Hawaii many times, and it had been 10 years since our last vacation:
David: You want company?
Wayne: Sure, if you have extra spending money.
David: Gloria, how soon can we file taxes?
Gloria: I will try to get an appointment this week.
David: I’m booking the flight – say ‘no’ right now or we ARE going to make your dream come true!

I met with our tax advisor that Friday and we got our return the day before we left. Although the money could have (maybe should have) been spent somewhere else, a lifelong dream was fully realized and my best friend was there with me.

The moral of this story is to never give up on you dreams – listen to the deep, inner pining of your soul. Always follow your heart’s desire to the ends of the earth if it leads you there. The wonder and beauty that you encounter on the other side of that door is indescribable and so much better when it’s up close and personal.3
